Katrina Dreamer Interviews Leila Jo Crawford

I am thrilled to interview Leila Jo Crawford of Crafting the Sacred for this week’s Katrina Dreamer Interview. She and I recently collaborated on a dream and tarot workshop and had ourselves quite a time. Leila Jo never fails to make me smile and she does a damn good tarot reading. So how does the tarot connect with nature? Read on to find out.

1. What is the importance of nature?
Nature is the sacred container that we inhabit and connects us.  I believe that having awareness of and honoring the interconnectedness of our world is so important to our souls.  We humans are really so very small in comparison with the variety and breadth of our universe.  I am constantly aware of this when looking at the night sky and realizing that while those stars died millions of years ago, their light is now only reaching us.  How can we not be humbled by the vastness of our world?

2. How do you connect with nature?
I try to remember that nature is not a far away, mythical, magical place separate from my day-to-day life.  More often connecting with nature means a walk around my neighborhood noticing the seasonal changes in the gardens and bird life.

My relationship to my body and how I treat it is also an integral part of my connection to nature.  If I am mindful of my body’s natural rhythms and how I nourish myself, I feel that I am also honoring mother earth and all her beings.

3. How does your work invite others to reconnect with or interact with nature?
As an intuitive and tarot reader, most of my work revolves around helping clients find peace and direction when faced with life’s transitions.  As a society, we are so disconnected from the natural rhythm of life and impatient for things to change as soon as we experience any discomfort.
In my readings I often use analogies of the natural world and its cycles of life and death to center my clients’ experiences and expectations.  For instance, when we plant a seed, we know it will be weeks before seeing a sprout and years before the tree is rooted and solid — so it is also for the projects and relationships that we wish to thrive.

I truly believe there is a sacred shift that happens on emotional and spiritual levels when we enlist nature’s wisdom in our own healing paths.  Being patient and allowing unfolding in our lives is one of the greatest wisdom that nature can teach us humans.

4. What wisdom can you share that can help people establish a relationship with nature?
Be mindful of the world around you and how you move through it.  Take a moment each day to use all your senses to connect with your immediate environment.  What do you see, hear, smell, taste, touch and intuitively feel?  Making moments of connection to all brings peace.
5. Anything else you’d like to add?
Growing up in the southern hemisphere and moving to the northern hemisphere was a huge awakening to me of the earth’s power.  I feel that my awareness of the differences in seasons and daylight throughout the hemispheres, brings themes of balance, polarity and wholeness into my work and consciousness regularly.  This realization has been healing for me.

Leila Jo Crawford was born and raised in South Africa on the cusp of the June solstice.  Since moving to the northern hemisphere, she refers to herself as a winter solstice baby who has become a summer solstice woman.  Leila Jo offers intuitive, heart-centered tarot readings with an emphasis on healing, personal development and self-empowerment through her business, Crafting the Sacred.  When not pondering the meaning of it all, she can be found enjoying life with her husband and loved ones in Berkeley, CA.
